From a Culture of Guesstimates to a Culture of Evidence:  The Data Dilemma - Using It to Improve Success Rates

AtD Strategy Institute Workshop
Wednesday,  February 3, 1:30 pm-3:00 pm
Charlotte, NC

Blaine Bennett, Dean of Institutional Advancement & Technology
Dick Whipple, Director of Curriculum & Instruction
Hector Gonzales, Chief Academic Officer

The data that was produced in pre-AtD years by Southwest Texas Junior College was often the product of some mandated state or federal report. Most data were not readily available and many times, the production and analysis of data included some measure of educated guessing. AtD has played a pivotal role in transforming our college's culture - especially as it relates to the production, utilization and analysis of data. AtD's "culture of evidence" emphasis has been critical in directing how we make decisions and implement new policies and programs.

This workshop will pose the following questions:

  • Can your advisors readily access a comprehensive look at a student?
  • Can you readily identify cohorts of students?
  • Can you readily identify gaps in student progress?
  • Is data readily accessible for real time planning & decision making?

SWTJC will discuss how ZogoTech has helped answer these questions

Example

We look at a cohort in detail and try to track those students over time.

After 1, 2, 3... 7 long terms, what percentage of the 2005 Fall cohort:

  • Enrolled in Level 2 Math (blue)?
  • Completed Level 2 (pink)?
  • Enrolled in Gateway (green)?
  • Completed Gateway (cyan)?

Note that there is a huge gap between those who complete Level 2 (pink) and those who complete the gateway (cyan).  In the first 3 terms, a large part of that is described by the large number of students who never even enroll in the Gateway (gap between green and pink).  It's not until 6 terms (3 years) later that these start to converge, indicating students are procrastinating taking the Gateway class.
