City Colleges of Chicago

Creating a Data Democracy

In 2014 City Colleges of Chicago was named a Campus Technology Innovators Award winner for the OpenBook Project, a “data democracy culture supported by a flexible, interactive reporting and analytics system.” As the vendor partner on the OpenBook project, ZogoTech supplied products, solutions, and expertise necessary to bring the project to fruition. Recognized in the Administrative Systems category, City Colleges of Chicago is one of just 11 winners selected in six categories out of 215 nominations.

Where data had once been stored in multiple locations and was difficult for administrators, faculty and staff to access, OpenBook has succeeded at providing all 5800 employees at City Colleges of Chicago with access to the targeted information that they need in order to be more successful, productive and efficient at their respective jobs. Based on ZogoTech’s Student Navigator and Analytics solutions, OpenBook enables end users throughout City Colleges to access data from a single source on-demand, using flexible, intuitive, and interactive tools for ad hoc queries and reporting. ZogoTech also provides an integrated data dictionary that City Colleges customized to ensure consistent use of definitions throughout the organization.

City Colleges of Chicago selected ZogoTech as its technology partner for the OpenBook project due to the company’s ongoing focus on higher education and the fact that they offer easy to understand and flexible approaches that combine Microsoft technologies with customized web interfaces. City Colleges found ZogoTech to be the ideal partner for implementing data democracy within their organization.

Regarding the award-winning collaboration, ZogoTech CEO Michael Taft stated, “We believe in data for everyone, and this core belief meshed perfectly with City Colleges of Chicago’s aim to bring forth the considerable benefits of data democracy to their system. It was an honor to be part of this process and to see our client recognized with this prestigious award. We very much look forward to working with everyone at City Colleges of Chicago as they make their data more accessible and usable to those who need it most.”
